Artificial Intelligence Usage in an Education Setting

This guides some of the basics, benefits, and issues of using artificial intelligence in a college environment.

DALL-E 2 Explained

DALL-E Overview

DALL-E 2 is a Generative AI that takes prompts (both written and from existing images) to create new art. It uses a modified variation of ChatGPT.

The technology can create strikingly original images to use similarly to stock art or more bespoke graphic design. There are some issues to note, though. There has been a lot of discussion about the ethics of AI art (for example, see "The Ethics of AI Art") and the way it can create certain biases, its use of pre-existing art to model upon, and its impact on artists.

There are also certain tasks that it seems to have issues with (note: look at the hands and several of the faces).

Like all Generative AI, again consider it to be a tool and not a magical wand to do the work for you.

You can try it yourself but note that generating art is not free (you can generate some for free over time but any notable usage will incur a cost for credits):

With the examples below (each gallery was generated from a single prompt, given as title of the box), you can see how some images look more finished than others but essentially all have some issues on a very close look. If you do use DALL-E 2 to generate images, be selective with the output and make use of the editing features.

Example 1: An Old Man Walking in the Rain

Example 2: A field of flowers in the snow

Example 3: A college graduate gets their first job

Example 4: A cup of green tea sits on an old leather bound book near a window of a old house with sunlight pouring in
