Welcome!

The Sensory Space is a calm and quiet space where UAH students, faculty, and staff can take a much-needed break to regulate, relax, meditate, stretch, or just be. A variety of comfortable seating options, soft non-fluorescent light sources, and calming and sensory activities are available in this large space located in room LIB 210 on the second floor.

The Sensory Space is divided into four quadrants. Each quadrant has unique furnishings that offer different experiences and ways to relax and regulate, but each space is flexible and doesn’t have to be used in a specific way.

General Room Features

  • The overhead lights have a dimmer switch located on the wall between Quadrants 1 and 2. The lights may be turned off, full brightness, or anywhere in between.
  • Each quadrant has a lamp for customized lighting within each space.
  • The windows are covered with venetian-style blinds. These can be raised or lowered as wished

Quadrant Overview

Quadrant 1

Quadrant 1 features a coffee table, two floor cushions, and two floor chairs with adjustable backs for low and floor seating options. Activity items stored in this quadrant include assorted fidget toys, stress balls with different textures, tabletop Zen garden, coloring sheets and supplies, Rubik's cube, puzzles of various sizes, and noise machine with a diverse array of sound options. These activity items may be used anywhere in the space but should be returned here after use (a portable puzzle workspace is available in this quadrant as well).

Quadrant 2

Quadrant 2 features normal height and tall seating options, along with desk-height tables and bean bags. The bean bags are stored on hooks on the wall and have different fillings; two are filled with shredded memory foam pieces (the heavier ones) and one with traditional bean filling (the lightest one).

Quadrant 3

Quadrant 3 features fidgeting, rocking, and otherwise moving furniture. There is one low rocking chair, one orbital chair that rotates and moves around the chair base, and three "Tommy" stools that bounce, rock, and spin. A sensory wall with panels of different textures and activities is mounted on the wall. The panels are mounted with velcro pieces and may be removed from the wall for use and then returned.

Quadrant 4

Quadrant 4 is a body-movement and meditation space. Two extra-large yoga mats are available, along with two round cushions and two square cushions designed for meditation. This quadrant also features a lot of empty space to accommodate a wide variety of body movement and other activities.
