The checklist below is intended to remind you of key library-related details during your preparations for the upcoming semester.
- Validate your ID for library Services. Check your library ID number at the circulation desk (256-824-6530) so that you can search the library databases from off-campus, check out materials, use interlibrary loan services, etc. Your campus ID number must be used to log in to the library databases from off-campus. No login is required when on campus. If you are unable to login, contact us right away to fix the problem. Call the reference desk at 256-824-6529 or send us a question via libanswers.
- Place links on your syllabi to the UAH Library and to librarians.
- UAH Library homepage: http://www.uah.edu/library
- Email reference service: http://libanswers.uah.edu
- Librarians: http://libguides.uah.edu/subjectspecialists
- These links will encourage your students to find and use library resources and services. They also make a statement to students about the importance of doing quality, academic research rather than relying only on the limited access to information provided by web search engines. Encourage your students to get research help by contacting librarians.
- Place items on reserve at the library. Do you need to provide access to a single copy (or a few copies) of a book, article, video, software, etc. to a whole class -- without having it disappear? Place it on reserve at the library. Take reserve materials (your personal copies or library-owned copies) to the User Services desk with the Library Reserve Form (available at the library). Contact John Bjorne for additional questions: john.bjorne@uah.edu or call 256-824-6530.
- Consider whether your students have the skills and knowledge to carry out their research assignments. If they need to learn to use the resources of the physical and/or online library (library catalog, print collections, research databases, smart internet searching, etc.) consider scheduling an instructional session for them with one of the librarians. Update your own knowledge of the library resources by connecting with a subject librarian before classes begin. For more information about the library's instruction program, email or call Ron Schwertfeger at 256-824-6713. To schedule a session, fill out a form here.
- Provide copies of any research assignments to the librarians even if you are not scheduling instruction sessions with a librarian. This will help us identify any potential problems for your students and will aid us in helping them with their research. Call the reference desk at 256-824-6529 to keep us informed or to ask questions.
- Recommend any materials (books, journals, software programs) that you believe the library should own, any materials to which it should subscribe, or any resources to which it should provide access. This would include any software to be installed in the library's labs. Send your requests to David Moore at mooredp@uah.edu or call him at 256-824-6540.
- Make sure items on your course reading list are available. Are they either sold in the bookstore or available in the library? If not (oops!), we may not be able to solve this problem overnight, but the library will usually want to add any of the non-textbook material to its collections. Please send the reading list to David Moore at mooredp@uah.edu.
- Ask us anything! Have a question? Don't know who might have the answer? Here's a brief directory of people, but you can also call the reference desk at 256-824-6529 or contact us.
