Using Google Scholar to find academic articles

Google Scholar is a tool we recommend using when seeking out academic resources that may supplement the offerings at Salmon Library. It should not be considered as a total replacement, as some of the content on Google Scholar will not be available to you in full text format. However, used correctly, it can search for freely available, academic content as well as direct you toward Salmon Library's collection as well in certain cases.

First of all, head to Google Scholar, then conduct a search as you would in a "regular" Google search. For example: food insecurity AND college students

Notice that each of the results below contain some extra information, such as the circled portion indicating how many times this article has been cited, at least according to Google's metrics. Also, if you look to the right of the screenshot below, you'll see a link (if available) to view a pdf or website hosting that resource:

To potentially expand what can be accessed via Google Scholar, you can click on the little settings icon on the top left of the screen, as seen below:

Once you click Settings, hit the Library Links option that appears on the left, as seen below.

Once you do so, type UAH in the search box that appears, then hit the search icon/magnifying glass or hit Enter to search for UAH. You should then see an option to select UAH Salmon Library-ViewIt@UAH. Select that option, then hit Save

Once you've done this, you should see the same result list as before; however, some of your results will now have a ViewIt@UAH link to the right of it, as shown below:

These ViewIt@UAH links will take you to the single sign-on portal you'd normally use to login to UAH resources off campus. Sign in, then you should be directed through a proxy server to our version of that article in Pathfinder!

Using Google Scholar is a great way to search the web and UAH for credible sources!
